April Workshops at AO

Planning a 100-mile canoe trip on the Allegheny River

Scout Troops, friends, families, or solo adventurers - if you've dreamt of tackling 100 miles on the Allegheny River but aren't sure how to begin the planning process, this workshop is for you!

We'll give a quick rundown of the 100-mile trips we've taken on the Allegheny River, to include gear we've used, campsites we've stayed at, caution areas along the way, and a quick run-through of our meal prep. We'll then open it up to discussion, helping each person/group with logistics, recommended daily mileage, resupply points, and camping recommendations. We'll also cover river water level monitoring as you get closer to your trip date.

When: Saturday, April 6th, 2024, 12:00 - 2:00pm

Where: Allegheny Outfitters, 20 Clark St, Warren, PA 16365

What you should bring: Notebook and writing utensil.

DNA of a River

Our waterways are always changing. This workshop will focus on what makes up our local creeks and river, how water reacts to those things, and how to decipher and recognize the safest path.

Utilizing our "river in a bag," we'll have a hands-on discussion covering how water reacts to river features (downstream and upstream V, eddy, eddy lines, hydraulics, holes, seams and standing waves, etc); and hazards - both natural (sweepers, deadheads, strainers), and man-made (bridges, low-head dams, dredged areas). We'll focus on how these affect the paddling experience and how they change at different water levels. We'll reference these features and hazards with photos and videos from local waterways including the Allegheny River, Clarion River, Brokenstraw Creek, and Conewango Creek.

(Please note - this is a classroom workshop. We will not be on the water. Clicking sign-up and pay will add this item to your cart. Your seat is confirmed once you complete checkout.)

Workshop: Packing a Kayak for a Multi-Day Trip

Packing for a multi-day trip in a kayak can be tricky. If you’re considering your first overnight kayaking trip, this workshop is a great starting point for that adventure.

We’ll organize and pack all our essentials (shelter, food, sleep system, water filtration, and first aid) and a few luxury items we can’t live without (we’ve earned that camp pillow!), explaining gear we use and how we stow it while considering space limitations, weight distribution, and organization. We'll then cover our favorite one-night, two-day trips along the Allegheny River, including any caution areas, recommended campsites, and points of interest.

Each participant should leave with a solid foundation on what to pack and how to pack it.
