Allegheny River Paddling Guide

Every summer, hundreds of people travel to northwestern Pennsylvania to canoe and kayak the Allegheny River. It’s easy to understand why. The Allegheny is part of the nation’s Wild and Scenic Rivers System. It boasts several campgrounds, trails, historical sites and other points of interest, such as the Allegheny National Forest. Paddlers share the calm and scenic waterway with eagles, Great Blue Herons, snapping turtles, white tailed-deer and many other species. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day trip with your buddies or an overnighter to teach the kids camping skills, we’re here to help. Just be careful – you might get hooked. Some of our groups have been coming back for more than 20 years.

We are open seven days a week though Labor Day weekend. Monday through Thursday our first shuttle leaves for Kinzua Dam at 10 a.m. and the last one departs at 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday the first shuttle leaves at 8 a.m. and the last one departs at 3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome but folks are encouraged to call ahead to make sure we have enough canoes and haven't closed due to weather or for fleet maintenance. Reservations are strongly recommended on weekends, around holidays and for groups of six or more boats.

Allegheny Outfitters has been around since the early 1980s. Our family bought the business in 2006. We also own another livery farther downriver, called Indian Waters Canoe and Kayak Rentals. Most of our trips are unguided, but we are paddlers and anglers ourselves and take pride in learning everything we can about the river so we can pass that knowledge on to you. We also strive to be good stewards of the Allegheny so its beauty can be enjoyed for generations to come.

PIPER and JOSH LINDELL, the owners of Allegheny Outfitters Inc. and Indian Waters, grew up in Warren County, where the Allegheny is located. Every summer, they spend hundreds of hours helping people plan and execute trips along the Allegheny River and its tributaries. They are also co-publishers of the Allegheny River Paddling Guide, a water resistant map and guidebook on the river.
